A1

Some / Any

some and any mean an unspecified amount. Do not always translate them as “some particular ones”.

Some

Affirmative sentences; also offers and requests:

  • I've got some friends in Gdańsk.
  • There is some milk.
  • Would you like some tea?
  • Can I have some water?

Any

Questions and negatives:

  • Have you got any brothers?
  • There isn't any sugar.
  • I don't have any time.

Use with plural countables and with uncountables. For one countable thing at A1, prefer a/an: Have you got a pen? (not any pen).
