Present Perfect Simple: Formation and Use

Present Perfect links the past to now: a result in the present, or life experience, without a finished time phrase (yesterday, in 2019 — then use Past Simple).

Form: have / has + past participle (V3): worked, gone, seen.

  • I have lost my keys. — I do not have them now
  • She has visited Japan. — experience
  • We haven't finished yet.
  • Have you ever eaten sushi?

Markers: ever, never, already, yet, just, since, for, recently.

  • I've lived here for three years. / since 2023 — I still live here
  • I lived there for three years. — a finished period, Past Simple

American English often uses Past Simple where British English prefers Present Perfect with just / already / yet. Both are understood.
