Question Tags: Confirmation and Clarification

A question tag is a short tail after a comma: confirmation or a light question.

Rule: affirmative sentence → negative tag; negative sentence → affirmative tag. The auxiliary matches the tense.

  • She works here, doesn't she?
  • They haven't left, have they?
  • He can drive, can't he?
  • Let's go, shall we?
  • I'm late, aren't I? (not amn't I)

Falling intonation = I expect agreement. Rising = I really ask. With imperatives: Close the door, will you?
