Questions (Yes/No, Wh-)

English questions are not built by intonation alone. You need a fixed word order: an auxiliary (or be / can) comes before the subject. Rising intonation helps, but grammar does the real work.

Yes / No questions

The answer is yes or no.

  • to be: Are you a student? — Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
  • Is he Ukrainian?
  • Other verbs: Do you like coffee? · Does she live here? (he/she/it → does, verb without -s)
  • Can you swim? — Yes, I can. / No, I can't.

Wh- questions

what, where, when, who, why, how, which, whose + the same order as Yes/No:

  • Where do you live?
  • What is her name?
  • When does the train leave?
  • Who is this? — with who as subject, often no do: Who lives here?
