Future Forms: Ways to Express the Future Tense in English

English has no single “future tense”. At A2, three forms cover most speaking:

Will

A sudden decision, a promise, or a prediction without strong evidence:

  • I will help you.
  • I think she will pass the exam.

Negative: won't = will not: I won't be late.

Be going to

A plan, or a prediction based on what you can see:

  • I'm going to start a course in October.
  • Look at those clouds. It's going to rain.

Present Continuous as a plan

An arrangement in the diary: I'm meeting Anna at 6. · We're flying tomorrow.

Timetables (trains, cinema) use Present Simple: The train leaves at 9.
