Mixed Conditionals: Combining Past and Present

Mixed conditionals combine one time in the condition and another in the result.

Past → present

A past condition, a present result:

  • If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.
  • If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn't be late.

Present (state) → past

A present fact or quality, a past result:

  • If I weren't afraid of flying, I would have visited you.
  • If she spoke Japanese, she would have got the job.

This is not a “third tense”. Mix only when the two time lines really differ.
